What Does an Evaporator Do?

An evaporator is the indoor component of a refrigeration system, installed inside the cooled space. Refrigerant circulating through the evaporator coil absorbs heat from the surrounding air, which lowers the temperature inside a walk-in cooler, freezer, or other refrigerated space. Paired with a matched condensing unit, the evaporator is what actually does the cooling work inside the box.

Air Defrost vs. Electric Defrost: What's the Difference?

An air-defrost evaporator clears frost buildup using ambient air, which works well in medium-temp applications where the space stays above freezing during defrost cycles. An electric-defrost evaporator uses heating elements to melt frost directly, which is necessary in low-temp and freezer applications where ambient air alone won't clear ice buildup.
