What Does an Evaporator Do?

An evaporator is the indoor component of a refrigeration system. Refrigerant circulating through the evaporator coil absorbs heat from the surrounding air, which lowers the temperature inside a walk-in cooler, freezer, or other refrigerated space. The coil itself is typically built from copper or aluminum, chosen for durability and efficient heat transfer.

Air Defrost vs. Electric Defrost: What's the Difference?

An air-defrost evaporator clears frost buildup using ambient air, which is the more common configuration and works well in applications where the space stays above freezing during the defrost cycle. An electric-defrost evaporator uses a heating element to melt frost directly, which is necessary in low-temp and freezer applications where ambient air alone won't clear ice buildup.

Why Buy a Used Evaporator?

A used or surplus evaporator delivers the same heat-absorption performance as a new unit at a lower cost, which works well for replacing a failed evaporator or building out a system on a tighter budget.
